As the Bharatiya Janata Party made considerable gains in the Northeast in the election results that were announced for the states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took centre stage at New Delhi’s newly inaugurated BJP headquarters to address jubilant party workers. With the BJP set to from government in Tripura and Nagaland, showing a considerable surge in the party’s popularity in the Northeast, the Prime Minister said that the victory was a result of the sacrifices that party workers had made for their political ideologies. The BJP’s win in the Left bastion of Tripura, the PM said, was the people’s answer to the violence by parties who were unable to digest electoral defeat. “Winning or losing in elections is a natural process in democracy. It is the beauty of a democracy. But one must have the ability to digest victory and accept defeat with a sporting spirit.”

In his speech that he halted briefly due to ‘Azaan’, Prime Minister Modi said that innocent party workers had laid down their lives due to their political ideology and dedicated the win to them. “When the sun sets, it is red in colour. But when it rises, the colour is always saffron, ” the PM said, in a reference to the party’s win over Left in its bastion of Tripura. “From being ‘no one’, BJP has ‘won’ today,’” said PM Narendra Modi. The event saw top party leaders like Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and BJP chief Amit Shah in attendance.

Addressing the party workers, BJP president Amit Shah said he was hopeful that the party would cover the entire country in saffron with election wins and said, “I would like to tell PM Modi that the path he is treading upon, 11 crore members are standing behind him on that path. You carry on, in 2019 we will have an even bigger mandate.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi halted his speech just as he began his address at the new BJP HQ was interesting. The reason for his pause was the Azaan which was being recited. During his speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “So many BJP karyakartas have sacrificed their lives. The Left party has received a befitting reply for spreading ‘Bhay’ and ‘Bhram’ among people in Tripura.”

Earlier in the day, BJP supremo Amit Shah said that the party’s victories in the Left’s citadel Tripura and Nagaland was an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership by the people of the Northeast. Amit Shah said it is now the BJP’s golden era and it will be a complete era when it gets in power in West Bengal, Odisha and Karnataka from rival parties. “It is a day of joy for me and crores of BJP workers. The victory of the BJP is important in many ways….It is an endorsement of the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the people of the Northeast,” Amit Shah in a press conference.
